Crayfish are freshwater crustaceans which belong to the Phylum Arthropoda and the Infraorder Astacidea. They inhabit streams, ponds and lakes and can be found in a variety of habitats, including rocky, muddy, and vegetated areas. Some species can tolerate increased salinity and may be found in more brackish waters. Exotic crayfish can be accidentally introduced into a new region as discarded bait, aquaculture escapes or intentionally released after being used as a pet or school demonstration. Their impacts are varied, with some introductions having no or few negative impacts. However, some species compete with native crayfish, cause environmental damage by burrowing and spread crayfish diseases.
