Avicennia marina var. australsiatica (Grey Mangrove) is a bush or tree (3-10 m tall), wth arched aerial roots which stabilize it in mud and help the plant to obtain oxygen. This mangrove tolerates fresh and hpersaliine waters. It ranges from the Red Sea to South Africa, Australia and northern New Zealand. White Mangroves from New Zealand were planted in the Kendall-Frost Reserve on Mission Bay in La Jolla, by researchers in the 1960s. There have been several eradication attempts, but some mangroves still survive there (Candace Feller, personal communication).
