Invasion
Invasion Description
1st Records: Tura Head/New South Wales/Tasman Sea (Colgan and Middlefart 2011, Northern Hemisphere genotype, molecular identification); Haycock Headlands/New South Wales/Tasman Sea (Colgan and Middlefart 2011, Northern Hemisphere genotype, molecular identification); Green Cape/New South Wales/Tasman Sea (Colgan and Middlefart 2011, Northern Hemisphere genotype, molecular identification); Sydney/New South Wales/Tasman Sea (Colgan and Middlefart 2011, Northern Hemisphere genotype, molecular identification)
Molecular analyses indicate that most of Mytilus populations in southeastern Australia were derived from Pleistocene migrations of M. galloprovincialis and represent one or more undescribed species (Daguin and Borsa 2000; Hilbish et al. 2000; Westfall and Gardner 2010). However, DNA analysis has detected Northern Hemisphere genotypes of both M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis (Colgan and Middlefart 2011). However, their analysis for haplotypes does not distinguish between purebred and hybrid animals, so does not tell us if differentiated populations are present.
