1st Cryptogenic Records?: 3 mi (4.8 km) north of Jalipilla, San Lusi Potosi/Mexico/Rio Axtla (23 May 1961, Tulane Museum of Natural History, (TUMNH), Bowles et al. 2000); Padilla, Tamaulipas/Mexico/Rio Pánuco drainage, Rio Purificación (21 May 1961, Bowles et al. 2000)
Native Range- Veracruz/Mexico/Gulf of Mexico drainage (Rathbun 1910, cited by Schmitt 1933)
The northern limit of M. olfersii's range was believed to be Veracruz, Mexico (Rathbun 1910, cited by Schmitt 1933). This shrimp's occurrence on the US shores of the Gulf and the Atlantic Coast of Florida is believed to result from human introductions (Schmitt 1933; Holthuis and Provenzano 1970; Horne and Beiser 1977). It was first collected in Texas waters in 1974 (Horne and Beiser 1977), but its status in northern Mexico is cryptogenic.
