Corella japonica Herdman, 1880 is a solitary tunicate with a clear tunic and oblong oval body that is a distinctive bright pink with cream colored clusters. Its native region is Japan. In 2023, several individuals were spotted at a yacht center in Wilmington CA during a collection outing for a tunicate taxonomy workshop. 10 individuals were retrieved and positively identified by morphological examination and rDNA sequencing. During another survey it was still present in 2024 in the same location but so far it has only been found in that one place. Likely vectors for these species are ballast water and hull fouling, as Wilmington is part of the Long Beach/Los Angeles port system.
